Connie Ragen Green asked:

What kind of food are you feeding to your dog? Do you remember the olden days when we fed our dogs table scraps? Nowadays most people believe it is a bad thing to feed your dog food from the table. Many now believe that this idea was originally encouraged by the makers of commercial dog food, as a way to sell more of their canned and dried pet food.

Lately, especially after the pet food scare of early 2008, when hundreds of cats and dogs died after eating pet food tainted with poison, more and more people have returned to feeding their dogs more foods eaten by humans.

If your dog has special dietary needs, such as being diabetic or obese, the commercial dog foods simply do not offer good choices that are healthy and nutritious and meet the needs of your dog. They tend to be filled with ingredients that are not healthy at all, and also have many preservatives to extend their shelf life. We do not know for sure where the ingredients have come from because the government does not regulate packaged and canned pet food as it does food for human consumption. This alone is a powerful reason to stay away from commercial dog food.

I have been feeding my dogs homemade food for four months now. My dachshund is diabetic, so I was searching for a way to give him a diet higher in fiber and protein. I have now come to the conclusion that it is best to prepare his food myself. I also have three other dogs, a Maltese and two Yorkshire terriers, and they were beginning to put on weight and had become very hyperactive. After eating my homemade food for the past few months their behavior has changed, their weight has stabilized, and my dachshund has not had to have an increase in his daily insulin dosage. I am also saving money at the same time.

I prepare chicken by boiling or baking it, and then combine yams or sweet potatoes. These vegetables have a low glycemic index and are particularly good for diabetes. I also prepare lentil soup each week, and add this to the food as well. Legumes, like lentils and other dried beans, are high in plant protein. Finally, I prepare long grain brown rice, and my homemade food is complete. I only do this once a week, so it is not like I have to prepare my dog food every day.

I encourage you to learn more about preparing healthy and nutritious food for your dog, to reduce the risk of disease and help to extend their lifespan.

Most people don’t stop to think about the food they are giving their dog. The colourful packs on the laden supermarket shelves are normally as far as people give dog food a thought. You may be one of them, but are now branching out and looking for something a bit healthier.

Believe me, the packs can look tempting and with smiling veterinarians and dog breeders on the cover, you’re not that hard to convince.

But stop for a moment and consider a wild dog’s diet. Dogs are naturally pack animals and so they hunt in packs. They can bring down a large animal, as large as a cow, with their combined efforts. Then they all gather round, with much growling and snarling and consume most of the carcass, bones and all. Probably the only parts left is the hide and hooves.

Whether or not you can accept this idea, that’s how dogs evolved. And the wild dogs still manage very well. This is the most healthy dog food. There is nothing that can beat it.

Man, with his puny pseudo scientific ideas of improving on the natural diet of dogs is going down a dead end. You can’t.

Period.

There is only one type of healthy dog food. And that is the one which so closely resembles a wild dog’s diet, as to be virtually the same as far as health benefits are concerned.

Lets look at some of the differences between a wild dog’s diet and commercial dog food, a diet most dogs exist on (I won’t say live, as it’’s hardly a life).

A wild diet, a healthy dog food, consists of:

raw food

lots of raw bones

internal organs are consumed, but these are scarce compared with the muscle meat

carbohydrates which are limited to the stomach contents, so is small in the overall content

A typical commercial dog food consists of:

cooked food (many vitamins, enzymes and other nutrients are destroyed by cooking)

the meat is of poor (often extremely poor) quality (humans get the good stuff)

carbohydrates, in particular sugar, are a major part of the food – it’s cheap and bulks out the ‘meat’

the food is fortified with strong preservatives (not allowed in human food for their dangerous impact on health) – DESPITE WHAT THE LABEL SAYS

to try to redress the nutritional imbalance, isolated and synthetic nutrients are added – nutrients which can’t be properly absorbed and utilised when they are in isolation, or if they are synthetic

So in your search for a healthy dog food, keep firmly in mind the diet of a wild dog. It’s OK to take your time to get used to the idea. If you find the idea repulsive, just go slowly. Try to replace one thing at a time. Just keep in mind that dogs have evolved over millions of years, on this diet. Humans have only been producing (poor quality) commercial dog food for a few decades.

If you don’t like the idea of raw meat for your dog, that’s your issue, not his.

I also suggest that you keep in mind the concept that most people are lured by price. With the best will in the world, if a commercial pet food manufacturer suddenly started to produce quality pet food, because it would be more expensive, do you think it would be a sell-out?

That would only be possible if people had already started to reject the current commercial dog food and were now looking for a healthy dog food, so were prepared to pay a little more.

However, if you make your own dog food, you won’t need to find the extra cash. Not only is a homemade, healthy dog food economical to produce, it has an enormous impact on the health of your dog, often beyond your wildest dreams.

y dog food a myth? You’ve probably wondered, since hearing about the recent dog food recalls. Pet lovers like you fear that their dogs will suffer like so many others that ate food containing dangerous ingredients – wheat gluten and a product used in the production of plastics.

If you’re like other dog owners, you’re taking a much closer look at those dog food labels. They claim to offer the top quality, balanced diet for your pet, but how can you know if it’s true? How do you guarantee that your dog eats only healthy food? Is it even possible to get healthy dog food from manufacturers now?

It has become tougher to find inexpensive healthy dog food. They use high levels of preservatives and take a lot of processing that destroys nutrients. Many use filler to make up the quantity but it does nothing for quality. The most common fillers are wheat and corn. Dogs don’t need corn. In fact, it can be slow to digest, giving your dog no nutrients whatsoever.

Corn and wheat can also trigger allergies in some dogs. Any grain product should include the entire grain so your dog gets all the benefits including fiber, vitamins and minerals. Look for rolled oats, barley, millet and brown rice as these will provide the best nutritional value.

When you read the dog food label, look for those with the best ingredient ratio, which is 40% meat, 50% vegetables and 10% grains. The items are listed in order of quantity. You’ll want to make sure meat is at the top of the list.

Watch out for meat by-products as this can include indigestible parts of the animals such as feet and beaks. Also, be aware of manufacturers who list meat as the main product, and then follow it with meat by-products. This alters the nutritional ratio significantly.

Did you know that Vitamins A and B make good preservatives? Look for labels that list these instead of the cancer-causing chemical preservatives BHA, BHT and Ethoxyquin.

Choose a good quality, reputable dog food rather than economy brands as the premium food will contain ingredients of higher nutritional value.

Keep in mind that your dog might benefit more from a specific type of dog food, rather than a one-for-all brand. While both types of food offer value, some dogs have additional needs. Factors include your breed’s inherited health risks, your dog’s activity levels and any other underlying conditions that require certain dog food nutrients.

If you want to ensure your dog receives only healthy dog food, you can make it yourself. There are many recipes available online and in dog recipe books. Run an Internet search and you’re sure to find a wealth of choices. Look for dog-related forums. People love to go online and chat about their favorite subject – their pets – and share recipes.

Knowing how to read dog food labels will help you to identify the best product for your pet, but you can’t beat homemade for your peace of mind and to provide the best nutritional and healthy dog food to your beloved best friend.

Back a few decades ago, pet owners did not pay much attention to their dog’s dietary needs and fed them whatever kind of dog food was the most affordable. Human grade dog food was almost unheard of, unless it referred to feeding dogs what was left over as table scraps at mealtime. Nobody would consider eating the kinds of ingredients found in commercially made dog food. But today there are many sources of excellent dog food that are made with ingredients we all recognize as suitable for humans, such as red potatoes, carrots, and even apples.

Dog food in the 1950s and 1960s, for example, was typically manufactured using the by-products or waste left over from processing animals for human consumption. When cattle or pigs were processed, for example, whatever parts of the animal were not suited for humans might end up in dog food. But one of the main sources of meat in dog foods in those days was horses. Horsemeat was often derived from sick animals, because healthy horses would usually be worth more alive and therefore they escaped the slaughterhouse. So when old horses with poor health or younger diseased horses had to be killed, many of them wound up in dog food processing plants.

Today, fortunately, the standards for dog food have risen significantly. It is possible, for instance, to buy both dry and canned dog foods that are made from many superior ingredients including nutritious foods like brown rice, trout, bison, and chicken. Not only do dogs enjoy these kinds of food better because of the taste, but pet owners also enjoy the fact they generally have a much better odor than cheaper kinds of dog food made from low class ingredients. Treat your dog to a better grade of food – with ingredients fit for people – and your canine will have a better chance to live a much happier, healthier, and longer life.

If the current dog food recall has you scurrying about for a healthy and safe dog food for your pooch, look no more. A variety of resources exist to help you select and even prepare a dog food diet that you can trust for your dog. Here’s a few examples.

Davis Veterinary Medical Consulting via BalanceIT offers dog owners the ability to custom design safe dog food recipes by making menu selections much like in a restaurant. They offer ethnic recipes, traditional recipes, and even seasonal options.

An example of some of the healthy dog food menu options includes chicken breast, ground beef, pork, lamb, and salmon.

You’ll make a selection of your preferred meat protein and couple it with your choice of egg, cottage cheese, tofu, rice, potato, sweet potato, spaghetti, oats, barley, couscous and tapioca.

Once you make your menu selection, they will make a custom recipe for your dog that is healthy and safe dog food without all of the fillers and problems associated with commercial dog food. Certainly a better option than trusting the health of your dog to commercial dog food, which continues to be suspect with new brands being recalled almost daily.

The cost for these recipes is not cheap, it’s $20 for 1 recipe, $30 for 2 recipes and $12.50 for 3 or more recipes. So if you order several, the price becomes more affordable.

If this still seems a bit pricey to you there is another option.

Sandra Bailey, author of “Real Dogs Don’t Eat Kibble” tells us that heat used to cook commercial dog food destroys important nutrients that dogs need for immune system support. This contradicts the premise of cooked recipes but is touted by many dog nutritionists as the best option for your dog.

Ms Bailey suggests a home made raw dog food diet to maximize the delivery level of nutrients. This is easy to do and an improvement in your dog’s health can be detected in just a matter of days.

The challenge for many is how to design a healthy dog food recipe. Ms Bailey answers this challenge by including a variety of dog food recipes and tips.

Ultimately, the choice between a raw and cooked dog food diet is up to you. The key is to make sure that only healthy, natural ingredients are included in your best friend’s food. Anything less will contribute to potential health hazards, illness and a shortened life span.

If you’re not convinced that feeding commercial dog food is dangerous just take a look at what is included in many dog food brands at Once you do, you’ll want to do your research and make sure that your dog is not the next victim of tainted, posion commercial dog food

Adrian Namara asked:

Nothing is more essential to good training than good health. And the foundation of good health is a good diet. Depending on your budget you may or may not be able to feed your dog a larger proportion of fresh meat, but at least be prepared to spend enough for a good dry food.

Here are a few things to look for…

All dog foods are labeled with the ingredients in order by proportion. That is, the material that forms the largest percentage is listed first, followed by the second and then others.

One of the attributes that makes cheap dog food less preferable is the high percentage of ‘waste’ animal parts. When you see ‘by products’ on the label, it’s better to avoid these brands. If it does appear on higher quality dog food, which is rare, it will be listed near the bottom indicating a small proportion.

Those ‘by products’ consist of parts that were not considered usable for human consumption. That fact doesn’t by itself make the product dangerous, but the lower quality will have a long term effect on coats, muscles and bones, and overall health.

Just as one indicator, dogs with healthy coats (particularly, long-haired breeds) will look shinier and shed less. Assuming proper bathing and brushing habits, of course.

Some experts put the proper ratio of meat, vegetables and starch at about roughly 40%, 30%, 30% respectively.

Common meats used are chicken, lamb and beef. These provide readily digestible sources of protein – essential to healthy coats, muscles, etc.

Vegetables provide minerals and vitamins that help produce proper hormone and enzyme types and amounts, as well as compounds for good bone health and other functions. Carrots and squash, for example are both excellent for almost all dogs.

The starch content is often provided by brown or white rice. Either is an excellent source of carbohydrates. These compounds are broken down in the body to form the basis for energy and cell repair.

As with any food substance, some dogs have special conditions that make special diets necessary. Many Golden Retrievers, for example, are sensitive to wheat products. Corn meal is hard to digest for some dogs.

Look for these on the label and discuss with your vet whether it’s necessary to avoid them. Some indicators are soft stools, excessive scratching and frequent gas.

Some dogs will find dry dog food more enjoyable if prepared with a little water and microwaved for about 30 seconds. Feed dry at least occasionally, though, to help scrub teeth and gums.

Needless to say, go easy on the treats. Even quality treats tend to be high in fat content – one of the reasons the dogs enjoy them so much. One or two per day isn’t harmful, but go for the quality brands.

The price differential for good food is sometimes considerable – with higher quality dog food often twice the cost. But considering the effects on health you’ll likely make up for it in lower vet bills, or at least a healthier dog.

The shine of the coat, the clarity of the eyes and other less obvious indicators will show in the long run. And, in the final analysis, the health of your dog is priceless.

Wayne Kostencki asked:

A Good Dog Food

Despite what the label may claim, many of the dog foods available are not a good source of nutrition for your dog and some are actually harmful. The dog owner assumes that since the dog food label reads: ‘complete and balanced’, ‘premium’, ‘Healthy’, or ‘high protein’ that their dog will be healthy and well fed. This is not necessarily the case. Some ingredients are nearly indigestible by dogs, so if the dog is unable to break the food down into amino acids and then absorb those amino acids, the diet is of no value. You must look at the ingredients. Egg whites, chicken, beef, and lamb are at the top of the list of good ingredients. Wheat and corn are at the bottom. Preservative chemicals such as Ethoxyquin and BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) have questionable reputations and may be dangerous to your dog’s health.

Hint: Dietary deficiencies may take months to develop, while feeding a high quality diet will give you visual improvement in about three weeks.

Choosing a good dog food starts with the list of ingredients. The ingredient list is regulated by the government and must be listed according to weight in descending order. In other words, the main ingredient is listed first, the second most plentiful ingredient next, and so on. The first three or four ingredients are the most important. If corn, rice, wheat, and soybean meal are listed as the first few ingredients, then the food is vegetable based. If beef, lamb, fish or poultry is listed as the main ingredients, then the food is meat based.

In general, meat-based foods will be healthier for dogs than vegetable-based foods. The exception to this is a well balanced vegetarian diet which with time and effort can be healthy for dogs.

Be aware of ‘ingredient splitting’. If the list of ingredients contains several of a family of ingredients such as ground corn, yellow corn meal, corn gluten, and corn gluten meal separately, it moves ‘corn’ further down on the ingredient list. Corn may be the main ingredient if added together, but to the consumer it will appear that there is less corn in the dog food.

Often, low quality dog foods will use ‘ingredient splitting’. They will list a meat ingredient first; this will be followed by several similar materials listed as separate ingredients. For example, lamb may be listed as the first ingredient, then wheat flour and ground wheat. You may think that the lamb is the predominant ingredient, but the wheat products added together may outweigh the lamb.

Dogs need about 20-25% protein. Protein is the most expensive ingredient in dog food as well as the most important nutrient in your dog’s diet. The source of the protein determines its quality. There are 22 amino acids that make up proteins and 10 are critical in dog nutrition. Pick dog food with at least 2 sources of protein in the first 5 ingredients listed. Low-quality ingredients are not digested well and can produce loose stool. Generally, the better quality protein sources have higher digestibility.

Carbohydrates should comprise about 40-45% of your dog’s food and include rice, potatoes, pumpkin, corn, barley and pasta. Fiber is a type of carbohydrate that aids in nutrient absorption, bowel regulation, and controlling caloric intake by providing satiety. High fiber food can sometimes help a dog that has a gas problem.

Fats should comprise 15-20% of food. Fats are most vital to dogs with high-energy requirements as they provide twice the energy per gram than carbohydrates or protein. Usable fats include chicken fat, sunflower/canola oil, fish oil, and lactose-free dairy. Fats are also important as they contain essential fatty acids which contribute to a healthy skin and coat. A lack of fats in a dog’s diet can lead to a rough coarse coat, dandruff, and flaky, dry skin. Fats also make the food taste better to the dog.

HINT: Some dogs are picky. My dog Buffy would leave the little stick shapes of her Kibbles & Bits every time she ate. She would devour the rest.

Avoid artificial colors, preservatives, and sweeteners such as corn syrup, sucrose, and ammoniated glycyrrhizin.

Lets face it, do we really know what goes into the food that we feed to our dogs.Personally, I had no idea until I started doing a little research on it.After reading certain articles written by doctors, I was shocked to find out that most dog foods were all made with a variety of unhealthy chemicals. At this point it is not a secret, but again needs to be pointed out to those who are great animal lovers, with dogs being in particular.

Having read this, I decided to go about doing a small amount of research on how I could go about making my own homemade dog food, just to experiment and change my dogs diet .This is when I came across a website which was created by a doctor himself who was marketing his own dog food recipe book for dog owners. The guide contains some 250+ home made dog food recipes which exclude the usage of harmful products which are infamous for mineral deficiencies. 1. Healthy dog food recipes for both younger and older dogs

3. Gourmet Biscuit recipes
