It is called feeding raw but the concern is that your dog is elderly. Try checking out the recipes in Dr. Pitcairn’s books. He gives recipes for a variety of dog and dog conditions. Not sure it will be any cheaper though. Try appealing to your local animal shelter. Depending on where you live, they might have a food bank for dogs. We have a few here where I live who do that.
this is what my bf and his family do.
they take the dry food and mix it with hot water. and VOILA!! you have wet dog food.
plus this is very good for your dogs and is a lot cheaper.
I use to make my own wet food for my older pomeranian, who has since passed at the age of almost 18. You can use brown or white rice as the base. I would cook up 1-2 cups per session. Add in a very lean meat like turkey or chicken add in some grated carrots or some other veggie your dog likes. You might want to add an egg that you scramble into the water for rice to cook in too. I would somethimes add a little of vanilla yogurt (no sugar added) after it has cooled to keep it moister or a little cottage cheese. Since their sense of smell goes as they age I would sometimes use some liver diced small. Hope this helps it you try it.
