Music is My Life asked:

My Dog Refuses to eat his dog food. He eats dog treats. My family has been feeding him meat for a few years now. Is this unhealthy for my dog?

dogs are carnivores more than omnivores – feeding a health diet of meat is not wrong.

No, as long as you supplement the diet with canine vitamins and feed it food your vet recommends. I feed my English Bulldog lamb and brown rice or chicken and brown rice only. The store bought dog foods (I tried many) always made her sick.

Yes it is. You should try not feeding him human food and just leave out the dog food. He will get hungry enough and start eating his own food. Unless it is a small dog that they cook meals for, like toy poddles and such.

before dogs became pets they were carnivores so i dont think its bad. in colombia where im from, we never bought our dogs specials dog food, we gave him meat, soup, potato salad, beans watever we ate. i sometimes give him some steak and stuff

Dogs are naturally carnivores, in fact some health diets for dogs consist entirely of raw meat. Really, it depends on what kind of meat you’re feeding him. Try looking up raw diets, and they should give you an idea of what is good for your dog and what isn’t.

Raw right? Cooked meat is ok but if you have been feeding him meat for years it should be raw and not cooked. Dogs can handle raw meat and bones.

EDIT: Oh yeah forgot organs too. Lungs kidneys, heart liver you name it. Also dogs do not need grains or veggies. One dogs do not digest grains properly hence why kibble sits in their stomach for so long. As for veggies they don’t need them they don’t have the proper stomach enzymes to break down the cellulose in vegetables, hence why those who feed BARF diets pulp up the vegetables they add.

The only time a wild canine comes in contact with vegetation is grass for upset stomachs and the stomach contents of prey animals that get eaten whole – small rodents and the occasional rabbit gut.

Yes plenty of owners on here given their dogs fruits and veggies but they do not actually NEED them like we do

you need to balance it with some vitamins in dog food

No,if he’s fed quality food. We cook for our rottweilers. We have a vet approved recipe. It is 1/3 protein (chicken, lean ground beef, eggs) 1/3 veggies (carrots, beans, celery, peas, spinich, small amount of cabbage etc NO onions and not a large amount of garlic) and 1/3 grain. We used both brown and white rice and oatmeal too. They love their food. We don’t add any seasonings or salt. Sometimes my husbands eats dinner with the dogs. He just adds salt!!!

Be sure to supplement his diet with vitamins. We also give our dogs yogurt, (probiotic), Vit E and fish oil (for their skin and coats), and B Complex and C.

Meat itself is not nutritionally balanced. A nutritionally balanced diet is necessary for a dog to live a long, happy life – dogs that don’t get proper nutrition, just like people, will encounter plenty of problems when they get into their later years, which will either cost you an arm and a leg or the dog’s life.

Start researching BARF. Switching over to raw food and educating yourself about what a dog’s diet should contain would be a good idea.

None of that is necessary, however. A dog will eat when its hungry, whether it likes the food you provide him or not; they’re not going to starve themselves.

It depends on which human food you feed him. You can look into a raw diet , and get the right balance of muscle meat, organ meat, and bone. Some human foods are toxic to dogs, and some have no value whatsoever in a dog’s diet. A diet of only dog treats does not have much nutritional value. Good luck!

Here’s some more information:

Foods that are toxic to dogs:

Yes it is very bad to feed him people food. He needs vitamins and minerals that may not be in just meat. He needs vegetables and grains too. You may notice that he has smelly gas–from his stomach not being able to handle people food. Stop feeding ALL people food only dog food. He may not eat for awhile but when he gets hungry enough he will. It’s much better for him and he will live longer.

Feeding your dog human food can affect his/her aggresion. You should try diffrent foods with you dog. Try putting a little human food in the dog food. Than gradual stop putting the food out. The dog shouldnt notice that the food is gone. Nobody like a greedy dog. Like my friends dog. She feeds him human food to. So whenever me and my friend eat. Her dog always sratches my legs begging me to feed her.

Let me put this into perspective:

How many fat dogs have you seen that eat a healthy diet of ONLY dog food?

ZERO.

How many fat people have you seen that eat a normal diet of people food?

TONS.

Some foods are safe for dogs, but not all. Just avoid feeding him people food until he eats his own food again.

He only refuses to eat his food because he knows that you will give him yours. Don’t give him people food or treats. Give him HIS food and nothing else, he’ll eat it. Dogs don’t let themselves starve.
