dog food
Curious Old Woman asked:

My dog likes ALPO better then the expensive brand dog food. I’ve tried feeding her higher premium brand foods, but she seems to prefer the taste of ALPO.

Is it ok if I feed that to her instead?

If your child would rather have McNuggets and fries than broiled breast and broccoli, would that be okay? They are both chicken and veggies, right?

i wouldnt if i was you…i would get her a high quality food its better for her and you’ll see that in the long run…you can always add can food, eggs different things in with the food to where she’ll enjoy it more.

Dogs like the cheaper food because it is loaded with sugar- its the same reason we like the taste of fried foods and candy over veggies.

Mix a bit of the alpo in with the good food for a while, until she gets used to the other brand. It is important that she likes it, but most important is her health!

Mom of Three couldn’t have said it any better.

not to be rude but that’s like asking is it okay for me to feed my children chocolate and lolipops for the rest of their life because they like it better?.

find a high quality meat based food with no meat by-products that she likes. im sure you haven’t exhausted all your options.

You may want to give her some very good vitamins to go with her food. You could try mixing the Alpo with a little more appropriate dog food. Use a larger portion of the Alpo. Little by little you can decrease the Alpo portion and increase the better dog food. This often works when having to change pets from one brand of food to another.

If you feed it to her and she stays healthy and trim then sure. If she starts to gain wt or look bad, gets a bad vet visit etc..then you have your answer..No.

my opinion is check all the sugar fat and nutrition levels. sometims the cheaper brand may be better then the more expensive one. its like the cheap black and gold brand’s tasty cheese is bought from the expensive devondale dairy brand. so if its better and she likes it buy it

It doesn’t matter about the price. So give her the cheap one she likes it better tan that expensive junk you give her.

Alpo is one of the lowest on the totem pole of dog food.

What higher premium brand foods are you speaking of? There is no such thing in a typical pet store like Petsmart or Petco. They SAY they have high quality food, but it’s most definately not.

It’s unhealthy to give a dog low quality food for the following reasons….
Many low quality foods have a high content of allergens.
They also carry a lot of filler that’s non-digestable.
Low quality foods often bake out half of the good vitamins.
Low quality foods ship their ingrediants in from other countries, (and grossly enough, cats and dogs ‘fall’ into the vat of imported meats used for pet food, so thinking about the QUALITY of those ingrediants is important).
It’s unhealthy for their eyes, ears, teeth, coat, and digestive system.
They need to eat more to get what they need from it so it’s more likely to make them fat.

There’s many other reasons, of course.

Here’s one low cost high quality food we use; Canidae. It’s got all the wonderful things a premium brand has, without the high cost. It comes in wet and dry, so you could mix them up so she thinks she’s getting spoiled as well!

If you had a kid that would rather eat McDonald’s food instead of good, healthy meals, would you allow it? :)

Alpo is full of preservatives, indigestable grains, questionable meat sources (such as animal fat- which can come from ANY mammal, including roadkill and euthanized dogs and cats).

While it is true that dog foods in the US and Canada (not sure about other countries) must meet a minimum standard (in the US it’s AAFCO) regarding protein and nutrient count….the TYPE and QUALITY of the ingredients which those nutrients are derived from are NOT regulated.

Crappy dog foods can use meat from sick, dying and dead animals, questionable by-products, and cheap grains and still come out above the minimum standards……quality dog foods can choose to use meat from human-grade sources and avoid grains that a dog cannot digest (corn, wheat, soy)…..and they come out well above the minimum standards.

Which ‘expensive brand’ of dog food have you tried? Check out this site:

and pick a 5 or 6 star dog food, try it, your dog might just like it…..and while you’re at it, check out what it has to say about Alpo.

If your kids preferred jelly beans and ice cream for breakfast rather than toast and eggs, would you let them eat it every day?

No.

Very often dogs like the cheaper brands of food because they contain sugar, which has no nutritional value and is HORRIBLE for the dog’s teeth.

Sugar or no sugar, ALPO isn’t good for her.

Depending on the breed of your dog I might suggest looking into the nutritional needs of that specific breed. Then compare the dog foods ingredient list which you will be able to find online. I might also suggest this website which contains a list of 5 and 6 star dog foods that you may try.

Good luck and
God Bless
