dog food
Val asked:

I currently have him on Purina One Senior and with some research I now know its not the best. I want a dog food with glucosamine to help with his aging body, is this a good idea? The brand I was leaning more towards is Innova Senior, and second is Chicken Soup Senior. I am curious as to what others are feeding their senior dog. Also where can I buy Innova locally in San Antonio. Tx. Thank you for your advice.

Innova and Chicken soup are both good foods, Innova has human grade ingredients which makes it better, but whichever your dog does best on or likes best , go on Natura foods website they have a store locator to find a local store

I like Eagle Pack Holistics Select. I have my dog on it now. I also have had her on Orijen Fish 6 and Innova Evo, but some dogs have a hard time digesting those foods as they are very rich in protein. I think the Eagle Pack is a great balance of healthy proteins, whole grains and fruits/veggies. She loves it too. My dog is also on glucosamine (she has a trick knee and to slow it’s progress, we give her some daily) and we just got her little glucosamine/chondroitin chews from 1-800-petmeds. I think each dog responds to different foods on an individual basis, so you should just see what you dog likes most and what seems to give him the best results. Good luck! :)

You can buy them at one of those specialty pets’ stores like Petsmart or Petco or on catalog or mail order like Foster Smith. I have a 4 years old Lhasa Apso and a 3 years old Pekingese, I feed them California Natural Dry Kibble, Enova dry and moist food, and/or Evo. These are pretty good for their coat…since they have kind of coarse, dry and messy hairs that easily mats, these foods keeps the hair shiny and nice easy to comb and brush. Try them. Hope your dogs like these foods.

Here is a site that will show you which dog foods are the best and the worst. I suggest that you get any one of the dog foods that are top rated.
Most of grocery store dog food formulas, like IAMS, Pedigree, Science Diet, Purina, and etc contain meat and bone meal which has been known to contain dead dogs and cats that were euthanized in animal shelters. Their bodies are picked up and bought by the truck load by rendering plants , that also pick up road kill, dead live stock, and etc. They are shredded, and boiled. They skim off the fat on the top of the soup and collected it and sell it to pet food companies as animal fat, the rest of the animals’ remains are crushed up, dried and sold to dog and cat food companies as meat and bone meal.
You can read more about it here.
Here is an article where the owner of a rendering plant talks about it. He says that cremating the dead shelter animals would cause pollution, and that rendering them is good.
Here is further information on what you shouldn’t see in the ingredients list in your dog’s food.
Top rated dog foods like Canidae contain good healthy ingredients
