Go with either the nutromax or the iams adult formula. Remember to wean your pup to the adult mix by slowing adding greater amounts of the adult food to the puppy food and reducing the puppy food by the same amount. It should take about a week. You don’t want to upset hims stomach.
We just got our dog organic dog food since they seem to add more and more to the list of bad dog food. I’d ask you vet about when to change to adult food, I think it’s at one year though.
I assume that since his birthday is soon that he will be 1 year old. Some small breeds mature sooner than large breeds. If he is a small breed, it will be ok to switch to an adult type food such as NutroMax ( a good brand). If he is a large breed you might want to wait to switch him for another 3 months to ensure that his bones are fully developed and he gets all the benifit of the puppy food. I can provide a more specific answer for you if you desire and provide the breed type.
use iams thats what my GSD eats.
I am not sure if your aware of it but Iams and Nutromax were both on the recall list of 92 different brands of dog foods that were laced with plastics/chemicals. I use Purina Dog Chow.and I am so glad I did because no Purina product has ever been on the list and my dogs are like my kids to me.
Switch to a high-quality adult dog food.
When switching foods, do it slowly. I do this over about a two week timespan:
25% food A, 75% food B
50% food A, 50% food B
75% food A, 25% food B
100% food A
Read the ingredients on the food you buy. A grain should not be in the first couple ingredients ingredient (corn and such are mainly fillers, dogs don’t digest it well). Avoid foods that have a lot of by products listed.
Here are some good foods (these are just a few, there are definitely more brands out there that are quality dog food, but it will give you an idea of the ingredients to look for):
Chicken Soup Brand -
Merrick -
Innova -
Or check this website to find GOOD dog foods, not full of fillers and byproducts, they rate dog foods based on the ingredients, 6 being the best. I would recommend feeding only 4+ star foods. Any food 3 stars or less, I would avoid.

Here’s an ingredient comparison of not-so-good food (in this case, Pedigree), to good food (in this case, Chicken Soup brand):
Pedigree:
Ground Whole Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Rice, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat (preserved with BHA/BHT), Meat and Bone Meal, Natural Poultry Flavor, Wheat Mill Run, Potassium Chloride, Wheat Flour, Salt, Carmel Color, Vegetable Oil (Source of Linoleic Acid), Vitamins (Choline Chloride, dl-Alpha Tocopherol Acetate [Source of Vitamin E], L-Ascorbyl-2-Polyphosphate [Source of Vitamin C*], Vitamin A Supplement, Thiamine Mononitrate [Vitamin B1], Biotin, d-Calcium Pantothenate, Riboflavin Supplement [Vitamin B2], Vitamin D3 Supplement, Vitamin B12 Supplement), Minerals (Zinc Sulfate, Copper Sulfate, Potassium Iodide), Added FDC and Lake Colors (Yellow 6, Blue 2, Red 40, Yellow 5).
Chicken Soup Brand:
Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, ocean fish meal, cracked pearled barley, whole grain brown rice, oatmeal, millet, white rice, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), potatoes, egg product, tomato pomace, duck, salmon, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, choline chloride, dried chicory root, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, tomatoes, blueberries, spinach, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, yucca schidigera extract, L-carnitine, Enterococcus faecieum, Lactobacillus casei, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces cerevesiae fermentation solubles, dried Aspergillus oryzae fermentation extract, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.
Notice how the better food has more meats, less grain, and no by-products than the other brand? That’s where to start looking for what food is higher quality. Just because it’s expensive doesn’t mean it’s a good food.
Another thing to be weary of: A lot of vets will recommend what they sell i their office. They get profit and kick-backs from the brands they keep on their shelves, that’s why they push it. Truth is, vet schools don’t focus a lot on nutrition. It’s not saying that a vet is a bad vet because he recommends those foods, a lot of vets just are told this is good food, so they pass the message along without proper nutrition knowledge. Also, some dog food brands (like Hills) support vet schools, so vets have heard of it from the time they start college, which makes them think it’s good as well.
Well if he is turning 2 go ahead if he is turning 1 no. Dogs are acuatly still pups untill they are 2 years old i personally like Iams and Purina puppy chow or dog chow or pedigree. It just depends on ur puppy. and plus it can hurt your dogs tummy if you change too quickly its best too slowly change it. Whenever i heard this i thought it was dumb but for about a week my dog was sick! Trust me on this one!
I agree with Abbyful….change gradually over 2 weeks or so……i used to use Purina dog chow, then upgraded to Purina One, lamb rice, upon Vet’s suggestion, then I RESEARCHED the heck out of all dry dog foods because of the recent recall, and determined that CANIDAE is the best choice of all, especially because it is good for all life stages of a dog, from puppy to senior to overweight dog !! I researched on Independent forums, and Canidae co. forum, and even checked with a no-kill shelter near me, that sold Canidae…i asked them why they sold it, and they replied that so many breeders recommend it to buyers of their dogs !!! Purina is LOUSEY if you read the ingredients !! many people on Yahoo answers have recommended CANIDAE also, and said they were very pleased with it, and had used it for many years !! I recently started using Canidae, and my 2 dogs LOVE it, especially my JRTerrier !! also, the co. has a money back guarantee if you are not happy with their product !! check it out at Canidae.com or email me for more information, if i can be of further help to you !!
Hi,
They are many dangerous dog foods today , at a look at , take a look at this site has a great guide for dog food.
Hope this helps you with your dog
my dog is a shitzu and she eats the pedigree and her vet siad that that was the best for her so ask your vet and see what he/she says!
What you do is for awile give her half puppy and half adult, then about a month or so, stick with just adult
you need to introduce your dog to the new food by mixing half old food half new food. pedigree is good
Gradually switch from the puppy food to the adult food over a week or two so your dog can adjust to it.
I feed my two of my dogs Nutro natural choice Lamb meal and Rice. If you want to stay with Nutro, look at the foods in their Natural Choice line.
My other two dogs get fed Canidae. This is a great food with no fillers like corn, soy, or wheat. The soy in Nutro doesn’t agree with them, so that’s why I switched them off of it.
the bag of dog food usually advises at what age/weight to change to the adult formula…. i would stick to the same brands as your dog is used to it but i would buy 1 bag of puppy food 1 bag of adult formula mix them together till he gets used to it …
Which ever food you choose to use for your pooch, please make it a gradual switch. Don’t just stop feeding him one food and go straight to another, you might risk the dog ending up with some digestive issuse.
One year is a good time to change to adult food. I just switched my one year old Jack Russel to adult Purina One from the puppy formula. I like the ingredients list of the food and my animals don’t seem to get bored with it. I also like price in comparison with the upper brands witch seem to have the ingredients but cost four to ten dollars more. I would suggest to mix what ever food do decide to get with a small bag of what you have been feeding so not to upset and cause problems with there digestive systems,(IE diarrhea). Good luck.
