Canned food can be given as an occassional treat.

The purpose is to drain your wallet and not offer any real nutrition!

Not to mention smell up the house! LOL!!

Canned food is not filler. Niether is dry food as long as you are buying a good quality food. the canned food does have more water, so there is less food per unit of volume, but it's not filler really. Wet food is typically more palateable. Some dogs just refuse to eat thier dry food and sometimes mixing in some wet food will do the trick! I actually have a picky Boston Terrier. She won't eat dry food unless we doctor it up. Rather than canned we actually mix in some chicken broth with the dry and she loves it.

I feed my dog canned food because it's consider a filler and dogs do like to stomach it. If you mix it with dry dog food it can be a good side food, like humans having a main course w/ a side or two. I can't imagined my dog just eating dry food by itself, so I try to mix it with something.

I'm going to ween her off of it because I don't think she can stomach it and put her on a dry dog food w/ rice and other natural foods diet.

I accidentally left out the canned food one night or a few times (and yes I threw it away) and it was really disgusting. Like the creamy sauce turned into something else and everything seperated. So yeah no more canned food for her just natural foods.

I haven't explored the dry food vs. canned food for dogs. But I've done it for cats. Cats that are fed dry food are much more likely to develop diseases and stuff, because cats are supposed to eat all-meat (kibble is mostly made out of grains).

I'm not saying cats and dogs are the same. But dry food is given to cats because it's convenient and cheap. Could dry food really be unhealthy for dogs, and people just buy it because it's cheap and convenient? Why not? Humans eat junk food and fast food, even though it's bad for us, because it's convenient -- why wouldn't we treat our dogs the same way?

Cleaning a dog's teeth is not the main purpose of dog food. Plus, our dog eats rawhide bones and stuff all the time. Even though she always eats dry food, she would probably get enough teeth-cleaning from the extra chew-treats we give her. (The dog belongs to my parents, and that's why I haven't looked into the wet food vs. dry food thing -- it's their decision to feed her dry food.)

Canned food brings balance to your pet's diet. Could you live on beef jerky alone? People are led to believe that only dry food is best, but they are misinformed. Wet food provides nutrients that dry food can't...you just need to make sure it does not contain sugar, salt, or bht like you should with your dry food. Dry kibble loses much of it's nutrients in the drying and baking process, that is why it must be enriched...wet food provides fresher ingredients that have not lost their nutrient values due to high heat or cooling processes. You just need to make sure the wet food you provide for your dog is not the crap you get in grocery stores...look for holistic, preservative free canned foods in reputable pet stores. Also, it is a myth that dry kibble keeps your dog's teeth clean...do your teeth stay clean if you just eat potato chips? The only thing that keeps dog's teeth clean is brushing them, and having regular dental cleanings at the vet. Lazy people claim that dry food cleans their pet's teeth.

And OLD DOG above has his information backwards...it is the dry food that is mostly filler...or white bread stuff, as he calls it.

You shouldn't feed your dog this stuff. Not if it is a young healthy animal you shouldn't. This is mostly filler food, white bread stuff. The only reason I could think of that foodstuff being on the market would be for old dogs that have lost enough teeth that they have to gum their food down. That's the only good I see in canned dog food.

It depends what kind. You can get canned food that is made with mostly real meat, you won't get that with most dry foods, they tend to be made mostly of chicken and corn meal.

Sadly, people use it because it is easier. I think it is fine as long as you mix it with the kibble of the same brand.
Dogs who eat solely wet food have messier poos and more diarrhea bouts than other dogs who eat dry, and also vomiting and poor dental health can result.
It does not have a great value nutritionally because it is mainly water, but it does add flavor to dry kibble, much like gravy.
Also, a senior dog with little to no teeth left would eat wet food as it does not need to be chewed very much. Most dogs will just swallow it!
If you must feed wet,
I suggest
Natural Balance EatAbles!
They are wholesome and human grade meats and veggies.
Mixed with the kibble, a dog has a wholesome and highly-nutritional meal!!

I feed it to my dogs because they love it! The older dog (yellow lab) has had it his whole life (11 years) and refuses to eat plain dry food. We split a can bt the 2 dogs mixed with dry food.
